The Spanish Water Dog is a medium sized purebred from Spain closely related to similar dogs like the Portuguese Water Dog, the Irish Water Spaniel and the French Barbet. It was actually first used as a guard dog and as a sheepdog before being also used occasionally as a gundog and then successfully as a water dog, a dog who retrieved birds from the water after being downed by hunters and a helper to fishermen.
