Despite frightening mystique, shark fishing still in demand - Houston Chronicle
Blame - or credit - the later invariably involuntary response on the reptilian part of our brains, that atavistic core hard-wired with basic, instinctive survival skills our ancient ancestors developed to help them avoid becoming a lion's meal or being nailed by a venomous snake. [...] some of the half-dozen or so shark species known to try making a meal of a person - tiger, lemon, bull, hammerhead and even the occasional great white - swim in Texas marine waters. [...] chances of a shark trying to take a bite out of a person swimming or wading in waters along the Texas coast is miniscule. Since 1950, there have been 47 documented "unprovoked" incidents of a shark biting a person in Texas waters. Sharks can be very cooperative for anglers, greedily grabbing a hook baited with a chunk of pogy or squid or cigar minnow soaked on bottom or drifted in a bay, along a jetty, in the beach front surf or around offshore structure. Texas sharks come in all sizes, from sharpnoses and dogfish and bonnetheads that seldom weigh more than 10-15 pounds to the mid-range blacktips and spinners and other that run 40-150 pounds, to the true giants of the shark world, the tigers and hammerheads that can weigh more than 1,000 pounds. [...] anglers can tailor their targets to the tackle they prefer, from light inshore rigs suitable for jetty redfish to the coffee can-size reels and broomstick rods that offshore anglers and surf fishers use to battle sharks far larger than themselves. While most shark populations can handle limited recreational fishing pressure, unregulated fishing, especially heavy commercial harvest, has driven populations of many shark species to dangerous lows. Sharks, as with most top-of-the-food-chain predators, are long-lived creatures that mature slowly and produce relatively few offspring. Because of low shark populations caused mostly by overharvest, state and federal fisheries managers have made 21 species of sharks off limits to any harvest. Texas regulations allow an angler to take only one shark per day and sets a 24-inch minimum length requirement for Atlantic sharpnose, bonnethead and blacktip sharks and a 64-inch minimum for all other legal species.
