The story of Bhavana began in December 2013 when Patrick came to dinner at Bida Manda, our sister Laotian restaurant next door. He and his wife, Aubrey, had recently finished their time in the Peace Corps by traveling through Laos and much of Southeast Asia. On a short visit with his parents in Raleigh, Patrick was surprised to find a Laotian restaurant, so he booked a table, pulled us aside, and excitedly shared a few pictures from Luang Prabang, where we grew up. Delighted with the serendipity of that night, we exchanged phone numbers and kept in touch. Little did we know that the brief encounter would turn into a remarkable journey toward Bhavana.

The heart of Brewery Bhavana is our private production brewery a few blocks down the road on Bloodworth Street. There, within a community of artists called Anchorlight, Brent and I make our 10 core beers and a growing number of provisional offerings to fill our 40 taps. This brewery includes an expanding cooperage of wine barrels and foeders, from which we will soon blend our sour and barrel-aged beers.

Growing up in Luang Prabang, some of my earliest memories are of morning steam rising from bao baskets and the busyness of dim sum restaurants. Once the capitol of the kingdom, Luang Prabang sits at the heart of Laos, along the Mekong River. As the river stretches from the Tibetan Plateau, through China’s Yunnan Province, and travels south, it carries travelers, cultures, ideas, and cuisines. This is how Chinese cooking and dim sum came to Laos and arrived in my life.

At the center of 218 Blount Street, beneath the skylight and the fig trees, our retail shop breathes life into our restaurant and taproom. Each book, flower, magazine, newspaper, and journal has been thoughtfully curated to inspire and cultivate conversation. At our shop, you’ll find everything from beautiful books on art, design, and poetry to relevant readings on conflict resolution and philosophy, along with local stems foraged by our flower team, and custom floral arrangements. It is our hope that our flower shop and bookstore become a place for gift giving and that you will find something meaningful for yourself and for someone you love.
