The New Amsterdam Theatre, unique in its Art Nouveau architecture, was erected in 1903 at 214 W. 42nd Street. Most notably, Florenz Ziegfeld began presenting his legendary Follies productions here in 1913. The New Amsterdam became a New York City landmark in 1982, but the theatre’s interior was in poor condition from the building’s damaged roof. The New Amsterdam Theatre was built in 1903 by producers A.L. Erlanger and Marcus Klaw and was designed by architects Herts and Tallent. With 1,702 seats, it was the largest theater on Broadway at the time of its completion. In the 1930s, the theater closed as a result of the Great Depression and was soon after converted to a movie house.

The New Amsterdam Theatre is a Broadway theatre located at 214 West 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenues in the Theater District of Manhattan, New York City, off of Times Square. It was built in 1902–1903 and was designed by the architecture firm of Henry Hertz and Hugh Tallant;[2] the Roof Garden, where more risqué productions were presented, and which no longer exists, was added in 1904, designed by the same firm.[3][4] The remainder of the building was utilized for offices.[2]
