Buggy for Second Grade: It is Official!!
The kids choose a verb and wrote it down in present, past, and future tense. Then they used each of these words in a sentence. They turned out GREAT! One of the girls told me "Mrs. Cirrito we did a good job with our verbs!" :)

The Literacy Spot : Somebody Wanted But So .... What Works! My First Linky and a Giveaway
Summarizing is one of the hardest strategies to teach and for students to learn. Many students will retell the text ... almost word for word when asked to give a summary. In order for students to learn the difference between a retelling and a summary, teachers must model, model, model summarizing often.

Crafting Connections: Main Idea (FREEBIE included!)
There was a time when I dreaded teaching the topic of main idea and supporting details. Trying to teach students how to read a passage and pick out the main idea and key details was both challenging and boring. One year, the time came, and I knew that I needed to "spice things up"... or maybe I should say "cool it down" :) for my own sanity. I've always had a sweet tooth, so I decided to create materials that reflected the following ice cream cone analogy.

Teaching With a Mountain View: Character Project for ANY Novel!
We were reading the novel Rules, which my students absolutely loved! After all of our talk about characters, character traits, character conflicts, and character change, I was trying to encompass all of those things into a final project. Now that they are turning them in, I think it was a pretty cumulative assessment, which was my goal!
