Costa Rica, officially the Republic of Costa Rica (Spanish: República de Costa Rica), is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Ecuador to the south of Cocos Island. It has a population of around 4.5 million, of whom nearly a quarter live in the metropolitan area of the capital and largest city, San José.

Costa Rica is one of my favorite countries in the world. I love the never-ending activities, gorgeous beaches, plethora of wildlife, food, and people.

All trails seem to lead to waterfalls, misty crater lakes or jungle-fringed, deserted beaches.

Named “the rich coast” by Spanish conquistadors who first made landfall here in 1502, Costa Rica is one of the planet's most naturally splendid and biologically diverse regions. Though largely undeveloped until the mid-20th century (due to its lack of traditional “riches”-gold, silver, spices), the country is today drawing new generations of explorers with more lasting treasures: smoldering volcanoes, misty cloud forests, rare wildlife and bird species, and a surfeit of beaches that are the gateway to world-class surfing, diving, and sportfishing.
