The history of the All-Terrain-Vehicle as we know it today is closely tied with the history of Honda. Honda has been the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer since 1959. During the gas shortage in WWII, Soichiro Honda (Honda's founder) was unable to use his car so he had the novel idea of attaching a small engine to his bicycle.

The All-Terrain Vehicle cannot claim a history as deep or as long as the motorcycle but it certainly rouses the passion of owners and riders everywhere. The "ATV" first emerged in the 1960s and referred to amphibious 6-wheelers like the Jiger in 1961, the Amphicat manufactured in the late 1960s and the Terra Tiger.

The ATV operator injury rate has substantially declined since 1984. This is due, in part, to the ASI's expanded safety education and public awareness programs. The ASI will continue to be an information source about ATV standards, promote model state legislation on ATV riding, and serve as a liaison with state and federal agencies on ATV training and environmental issues.
