Awards in Astronomy

Observations with ESO telescopes have led to many breakthroughs in astronomy, and, over the years, have been responsible for some truly remarkable findings. Here is our list of ESO´s Top 10 astronomical discoveries so far.

Scientists who have helped further our understanding of cosmic phenomena — from gamma-ray pulsars to galaxy formation — have been awarded top prizes from the American Astronomical Society.

The ASA recognizes contributions to the promotion or extension of the knowledge of astronomy by conferring Honorary Fellowship of the Society. This includes recognition of contributions to the Society. A list of all Honorary Fellows is available.

The ASP recognizes individual achievements in astronomy research, technology, education, and public outreach each year. The nomination process commences in the fall, and nominees are welcome from ASP Members and members of the astronomical community.

The annual Space Pioneer awards recognize those individuals and teams whose accomplishments have helped to open the space frontier. The awards are divided into thirteen categories. The intent is to recognize those who have made significant contributions in different fields of endeavor to "develop a spacefaring civilization that will establish communities beyond the Earth."

As well as the Earth and Space Awards the Foundation is establishing a series of separately administered awards. They are listed below. They are administered to exploration projects based on applications for the annual awards, and are awarded to projects that fulfill the Foundation's vision.

The Space Foundation's Space Achievement Award recognizes individuals or organizations for space achievement, breakthrough space technology or program or product success representing critical milestones in the evolution of space exploration and development. The Space Achievement Award is presented annually at the Space Symposium.

Astronomy has experienced tremendous growth and development during the past fifty years as the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio waves to gamma rays was opened to investigation. Remarkable progress has been achieved in our understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe; the structure and dynamics of galaxies; the birth, life, and death of stars and stellar systems; and the formation and ubiquity of planetary systems.

The Royal Astronomical Society, encourages and promotes the study of astronomy, solar-system science, geophysics and closely related branches of science.
