The Johns Hopkins Headache Center: Trigeminal Neuralgia-Facial Pain
Trigeminal neuralgia is a disorder of a nerve that normally supplies feeling to the face with a syndrome of one-sided shooting facial pain. This nerve - the trigeminal nerve (5th cranial nerve) - branches into three divisions as it leaves the skull, one supplying sensation to the forehead, one to the cheek, and one to the lower jaw. Any or all of the three divisions may be affected.

AANS - Trigeminal Neuralgia
Trigeminal neuralgia, also known as tic douloureux, sometimes is described as the most excruciating pain known to humanity. The pain typically involves the lower face and jaw, although sometimes it affects the area around the nose and above the eye. This intense, stabbing, electric shock-like pain is caused by irritation of the trigeminal nerve, which sends branches to the forehead, cheek and lower jaw. It usually is limited to one side of the face. Learn more here.
