An early example of ultra-realism, this movie contrasts the quiet, bucolic life in the outskirts of Paris with the harsh, gory conditions inside the nearby slaughterhouses. Describes the fate of the animals and that of the workers in graphic detail.

In 1949, George Franju, the director of horror classic Eyes Without a Face, gave a taste of his abilities with Blood of the Beasts. Shot in several slaughterhouses in the French capital shortly after WWII, the horror-like documentary provides a glimpse of the rituals surrounding the production of meat: from the slitting of throats in one firm stroke and the precise stripping of skin and hair to the removal of inedible parts and the eventual hanging of carcasses on meat hooks ready for further processing.
