Jean Michel Massing has researched numerous topics, including Classical art from Antiquity to the Renaissance, religious imagery (especially the Temptations of St. Anthony, from Schongauer to Bosch) and various learned iconographies, such as the Calumny of Apelles and the emergence of the emblem.
