The world's smallest tortoise is the speckled tortoise, also known as the speckled padloper or speckled cape tortoise (Homopus signatus.) Indigenous to South Africa and southern Namibia, the padloper is at near threatened status due to traffic, habitat destruction and pet trade poaching. Trading the padloper is strictly illegal.
