The crested newts are large (up to 18 cm; 7 inches) heavily-built newts. They have a somewhat warty skin, quite unlike the smooth or granular skin of smaller species, such as the Mesotriton and Lissotriton. The back is dark brown or black, and there may be white stippling along the flanks.
